I despise political correctness as a rule. I think it is intolerant and focuses more on feelings than creating effective communication or solving real issues. It’s smoke and mirrors. It screams that its about being open minded, unless, of course, you disagree with it. Then you’re a close-minded religious zealot, or a flat-earther, or right/left wing nut job.
So, it’s no surprise that I hate seeing political correctness seep into the church. The most obvious and ludicrous way this becomes visible is the gender neutralization of the scripture as not to offend people.
For example, I was at Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday at a local parish and the service started out with the priest reading from the prayers, about how, on this solemn day, we focus on a man on earth (Jesus Christ pre-resurrection) who becomes a man in heaven (post-resurrection).
The pastor, on-the-fly, as he and his fellow politically correct priests often do, gender neutralizes the phrase, instead starting out with how we focus on “humanity” on earth… but then he was stuck, because the next part didn’t make sense, but since he committed, he stayed with it and said, who becomes “humanity” in heaven.
Humanity in heaven? What the hec does that mean???? Christ is not “humanity” in heaven. Christ, like it or not, was a man. Period.
I heard another priest at the same parish relay the Good Samaritan story, replacing the wounded “man” as wounded “person.” However, that all fell apart later when the Samaritan told the inn keeper to “look after him.” HIM. Not IT, not the PERSON, but HIM.
How stupid do these priests think their parishioners are?
Mankind, for over 2000 years, has made the very small mental leap that when the scripture refers to man, it often means mankind. We’re in our big boy pants now. We, along with the Catholics throughout history, know how it applies to us. We don’t need it to be converted to some stupid tense so we can understand it. Only in today’s panzification society are the priest more worried about someone who gets offended that the Bible says “man” than actually just reading the scripture.
The Holy Spirit does not need a rewrite!
God exists outside of time. So does his word. We don’t need priests to randomly sanitize the text to fit today’s social expectations. Society should NOT be influencing the Church, the Church should be influencing Society.
Keep political correctness out of the church. The teachings of God are hard and offensive to some. Good. They’re supposed to be. Do you think the apostles cared whether people were offended by their message? Do you think they got martyred because they made their message was culturally sensitive? They were killed because a fallen world hates the truth.
Grow a pair, priests. We don’t need weak leaders more concerned about offending the flock than speaking God’s truth in its raw and challenging form.
It’s not important whether we “feel good” about the faith. The only thing that matters is that we understand what God expects of us and if we are willing to sacrifice to live up to those expectations.
All of the other fluff, smoke and mirrors, politically correct bull spit, needs to stay out of the church. Forever.
