Doug Eboch continues his exceptional analysis of the screenplay structure, wrapping up the Act Two section with what he calls the Break, or as other screenplay instructors call it, Plot Point 2.
In the Break, it can take one of four paths depending on the eventual outcome of the film.
- If the film ends in tragedy, the Act Two Break is where the protagonist reaches their greatest goal.
- If the film ends in victory, it is where the protagonists feels all hope is lost.
- If it is a romantic comedy, it is where the protagonist gets what they originally wanted only to find out they don’t want it anymore.
- Sometimes the protagonist will overcome obstacles to reach their goal only to find they’ve put into motion something far more dangerous.
