Two years ago this summer we started Sonlight Pictures and shot a little web series called Nikki & Babs (originally titled Purgatory, USA). I cannot believe how quickly the months have passed since then.
At the time our hope was to create something that would help teens and give the actresses, Dorothea Bauer and Tiffany Ross, a way to express their faith through their passions at the time, acting.
After spending time with both of them together it seemed obvious how the story should flow… bring out the natural opposites of their personalities, amplify by 1000 and force them to be together.
What followed were five humorous episodes of Nikki & Babs.
Dorothea and I originally came up with 10 show ideas. We knew the Lord wanted us to make the series, but we had no idea how many He wanted, or how many we could pull off before the school year started.
The production was quick and lean. The crew usually consisted of me, the writer/director, and the two girls. The actresses were so wonderful both in front and behind the camera that I quickly realized how special this experience was. I tried to explain it to the girls, how rare it is for a show to work this well with actors of their age. This sort of chemistry doesn’t happen very often. God was good to us and these young thespians nailed it.
We were so blessed.
The best case scenario, in our minds, was to be able to get the web series online and hopefully touch some kids. That was it. Sonlight Pictures was just starting out and we didn’t expect more than that.
But, God had bigger dreams than we did.
We were contacted by Cloud Ten Pictures to distribute the series. We saw it as a wonderful way to get Sonlight Pictures‘ name out there and to show off our talented young actors, while, at the same time, it gave Cloud Ten Pictures the opportunity to reach the young teen market. A win-win for both parties.
Now, as I walked through a local Family Christian Bookstore to find numerous copies of Nikki & Babs so prominently displayed, the full breadth of God’s vision was finally coming into view. And I have learned my lesson… follow God’s plan and He will take you places you never imagined.
We also learned, from this experience, to trust in His wisdom, even as things change in directions you wish were not the case.
We had hoped to shoot another season of Nikki & Babs this summer, we even wrote all the scripts, but scheduling became problematic and we had to scrap the idea.
We had hoped to possibly shoot a Nikki & Babs feature film, but the Lord has different plans for the young actresses than to follow-up on the lives of their characters… greater plans, like mission work and film studies.
God also has other plans for us. And we feel so grateful to have been able to make Nikki & Babs at all. We hear back from youth group leaders and teens all around the country who have watched and were touched by the series.
It doesn’t get better than that.
So, the next time you feel God calling you to do something, go with the flow and see where He’ll lead you. I’m sure it will be some place you never imagined and the journey there will be more gratifying than anything you could have designed on your own.
Because God dreams bigger than we do…
