I fear we’ve become a little too chummy with God.
We treat him like he’s our buddy. Our pal. Our friend.
We’re wrong. He’s far more important than that. He’s our Father. He’s our Creator. And not just our Creator, but THE Creator… of everything, every where… of all that is seen and unseen.
His creation is so massive and complex that we can’t even comprehend it. We pat ourselves on the back when we figure something out, but I’m sure God must look at us and go “Oh, you figured out that DNA genetic code? Yeah, that’s kindergarten stuff up here, but good for you!”
We have lost our awe of God.
Remember, he’s not only the God of the New Testament, but of the Old. In the New Testament He is the God of the Trinity, of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, full of mercy and forgiveness, patience and understanding.
But He is also the God of the Old Testament, full of holy wrath and unwavering just judgment.
A God that destroys Sodom is a God we need to take seriously in our daily lives. A God that tells us being lukewarm in our faith condemns us to damnation is a God we need to listen to every single day. A God in Jesus who told the Rich Man that following the 10 Commandments is NOT enough is a God to which we need to pray and ask for guidance.
When we treat God as our buddy, we take Him for granted. We don’t aspire to be great because we put God on the same level as our other imperfect friends.
God is much, much more than that. God deserves much, much more than that.
When we have awe for God, we have respect for God. When we realize just how perfect He is and just how imperfect we are, we appreciate how far we have to go to reach the quality of holiness required to enter God’s Kingdom.
Getting into Heaven is not easy. It’s a hard path. A narrow path. We need God the Creator to help us overcome our human frailty in order to spend eternity in His presence.
We should honor God with worship, praise and respect.
We should treat Him with the awe He deserves.
