The time frame of 40 days in the Bible is often tied to the experience of being tested. So, as we enter the 40 day period of Lent prior to the celebration of a victorious Easter, we prepare ourselves by participating in the process of being tested.
Through Lent we offer a loving sacrifice to God by giving up something we cherish. We can also add something to our mix, such as prayer or more time reading the Bible. We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. And every Friday during Lent we abstain from meat, as another sacrifice and example of obedience.
The goal of Lent is to cleanse ourselves, purify ourselves, to spend this time growing closer to the Almighty.
As a priest said just this week, our sacrifice is not just so we can be without something, but so that every time we crave that which we have abstained, we are saying God is more important.
If we give up chocolate, every time we crave chocolate we are not to focus on the loss of chocolate, but on the belief that God is the most important thing in our life, especially something as small as chocolate. God is more important than anything we can sacrifice here since without God, we would have nothing to which we could sacrifice.
This Lent, we at Sonlight Pictures are reading the Bible every night, abstaining from various things such as colas, or television or movie watching. We are reading more and praying more and writing more.
And we are doing our best to grow closer to the Almighty so that when Easter comes, we can fully enjoy the celebration of our risen Lord and his victory over sin and death.
Praise be to God!
