Our next scheduled production is the intense short film called Forgiven, about a hostage situation that turns nasty. I had previously mentioned that the Forgiven rewrite was complete. After some further thought, it appears I was mistaken.
After writing our numerous lessons learned called Tips for Christian Filmmakers, I realized that I needed to take my own advice. At one point in the story the main character references the parable about the man hiring people to work the field, paying each the same no matter when they started working.
The parable is instrumental to the story, but it always bothered me how I had written it into the script. It fell victim to one of the standard problems… telling the audience instead of showing them.
So, the next step is to take that parable and do one of two things… restructure the hostage situation to visually mimic the parable or visually relay the parable in another way that works for the flow of the story.
There are a lot of nice moments already in the script that I don’t want to blow apart, if I don’t have to. In the end, however, the most important thing is to write the best story you can.
I’ll pray and contemplate and listen, then write. We’ll see what happens.
