As I mentioned before, the feedback on Purgatory, USA has been very positive.
What has interested me more than anything has been the wide ranging and often conflicting suggestions/observations/concerns about the show… it isn’t religious enough, or too religious, or should be darker or should be lighter or should be preachier or not so Christian, etc.
Purgatory, USA was always intended to be a sitcom… artistic fluff… Christian cotton candy. It’s supposed to be entertaining first and foremost. Hopefully funny. Hopefully memorable. Hopefully effective. But, in the end, light weight evangelism.
We wanted to wrap the teachings of Jesus Christ from the Word of God into small little bite-sized nuggets of easily digestible entertainment.
We’ll have more substantive work.
- The short Forgiven is intense and, at times, unpleasant. Funny it ain’t.
- Our feature film script Severed is an action film about terrorists and martyrdom.
- Our feature film script Redemption is a scary horror film about vampires and the consequences of sin.
They’ll be plenty of opportunities in the future to engage in more meaty cinematic Christian adventures. But for now, enjoy the sweet and fluffy appetizer Purgatory, USA.
The main course is coming.
